Sump Waterproofing in Chennai

Quick answer

Sump waterproofing seals an underground water tank on the inside so stored water stays in and ground water, sewage and salts stay out. Leaking joints are injected first, then the interior is coated with a system that resists pressure from both sides. In Chennai it typically costs ₹50 to ₹150 per sq ft of coated surface.

Why sumps matter so much in Chennai

Almost every home and apartment block in Chennai depends on an underground sump. Metro supply arrives for limited hours, and tanker water has to be stored somewhere, so the sump is the household’s main reserve. When it leaks, you pay for water that drains into the soil.

The larger risk runs the other way. Sumps sit below ground, often a few feet from a septic tank, a sewer line or a storm drain. In the monsoon the water table rises, in some areas to within a few feet of the surface. Ground water then presses on the sump walls from outside. If the walls or joints are porous, contaminated water seeps into your drinking supply. Families notice it as a smell, a change in colour or repeated stomach illness after the rains.

Street flooding adds one more route: dirty water entering through a badly sealed manhole cover.

Signs your sump needs attention

  1. Water level dropping overnight when nothing is in use
  2. More tanker loads needed than before
  3. Muddy, yellowish or foul-smelling water, especially after rain
  4. Water level rising by itself during the monsoon
  5. Damp, soft or sinking ground around the sump
  6. Visible cracks, flaking plaster or roots inside
  7. Salty taste in areas with brackish ground water
  8. A manhole frame that is cracked or sits below ground level
Root cause

What is actually going wrong

The wall-floor joint has opened.

As in any tank, this joint carries the most pressure and is the usual leak point.

Pipe entries are unsealed.

Inlet lines, suction pipes and overflow openings pass through the walls with only mortar packing around them.

The walls are porous.

Many older sumps are built in brickwork with cement plaster. Brick absorbs water readily, and once the plaster cracks there is little resistance in either direction.

Roots and settlement.

Tree roots seek out moisture and widen small cracks. Vehicle movement above a sump under a driveway does the same.

Pressure comes from both sides.

When the sump is full, water pushes out. When it is low and the water table is high, water pushes in. A coating that only resists pressure from the inside can be pushed off the wall from behind.

The cover slab and manhole leak.

Surface water runs in through gaps around the frame.

Notes

Crystalline waterproofing coating

Walls and floor

Grows crystals into the concrete pores and resists pressure from both sides

PU injection grouting

Actively leaking joints and cracks

Stops inflow before coating

Cementitious pressure grouting

Porous walls and honeycombed sections

Fills voids from within

Potable-grade polymer cementitious or food-grade epoxy coating

Final interior lining

Certified safe for drinking water

Non-shrink grout and sealant

Pipe entries

Packed and sealed

Raised, sealed manhole frame

Cover slab

Keeps surface water out

Crystalline treatment is the core of most sump jobs because it becomes part of the concrete and cannot peel off under back pressure.

Our process

How we do the work

  1. Inspect and test.We check water loss over 24 hours, examine the inside and note nearby septic tanks and drains.
  2. Empty and clean. Water is pumped out and sludge removed.
  3. Ventilate.A sump is a confined space. We run a blower and check the air before anyone enters, and a second person stays at the opening throughout.
  4. Stop active leaks.Any ground water coming in is sealed by injection.
  5. Repair.Loose plaster is removed, cracks opened and filled, and roots cut back and sealed.
  6. Detail the joints.A coving is formed at the wall-floor joint and pipe entries are repacked.
  7. Coat. Two coats of crystalline or potable-grade coating on the walls, floor and underside of the cover slab.
  8. Cure. The surface is kept damp for the period the product requires, usually five to seven days.
  9. Seal the manhole. The frame is raised if needed and sealed.
  10. Disinfect and refill. The sump is washed, chlorinated, filled and monitored for 48 hours.
Plan for about a week without the sump. We can help arrange a temporary tank for the period.

A typical household sump of 6,000 to 12,000 litres is often quoted as a lump sum after inspection.

Frequently asked questions

1

How do I know my sump is leaking?

Fill it, switch off the motor, close the inlet and mark the level. Check again after 24 hours with no water drawn. Any drop is a leak.

2

Can ground water really get into a concrete sump?

Yes. Under monsoon pressure, water passes through porous concrete, brickwork and joints. This is a common cause of contaminated sump water in the city.

3

Is the coating safe for drinking water?

Yes. We use only potable-grade materials and disinfect the sump before refilling.

4

My sump is next to the septic tank. Is that a problem?

It is a risk. Waterproofing both the sump interior and the joints is strongly advised, and we check the septic tank side during inspection.

5

Can the work be done during the monsoon?

Yes, though active inflow must be injected first. Dry months make the job quicker.

6

Is there a warranty?

Yes, a written warranty is given after the fill test.
